Telethon raises funds to support various WA charities to transform the lives of sick, disadvantaged and vulnerable children and thanks to the generosity of West Australians, telethon 2021 raised a record-breaking $62 million! We are thrilled to announce that FWF has been included in the 2022 list of beneficiaries.
With the support of telethon funding, we are contributing to the ORIGINS project and two other key projects; a high-tech scar assessment tool and a new information campaign. These projects are aimed to improve the psychological and physical well-being of children and young people during their burn journey.
Technology Innovation: A high-tech scar assessment tool will be used during burn treatments. This scanning technology maps the skin's surface and provides the burns team with valuable critical information that shows if the burn is responding to treatment. This understanding will allow us to improve patient outcomes and recovery.
Education Initiative: We are partnering with child and adolescent psychiatry specialist Professor Helen Milroy to create an information campaign that includes animations and videos that address the psycho-social issues children face throughout their burn journey.
Perth Children's Hospital will treat over 1200 children and young people with burn injuries each year. Although they receive world-leading care, their injuries leave them susceptible to illness for many years. Therefore, projects such as these can make an incredible difference in the lives of patients and their families.
Thank you to everyone who generously donated to telethon 2021, and we look forward to sharing with the community updates on the projects as they progress.
We appreciate the support we have from our 'burns family' - thank you to Mandy, Mark and Noah Stenbeck for sharing their story with The West Australian. Read their story below.
