The 14th annual Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) took place from 29 November to 1 December 2024 at Langley Park, Perth. Over three days, emergency response teams, industry professionals, and the local community gathered to showcase their skills, learn through realistic simulations, and celebrate collaboration.
As an official charity partner of MERC 2024, alongside the Blue Tree Project, the Fiona Wood Foundation proudly played an active role in both education and community engagement.
Our clinical research team conducted hands-on skills training sessions, providing essential guidance on burns first aid and the critical steps in initial burns management. All 18 teams had the opportunity to apply these skills in challenging real-world emergency scenarios, reinforcing life-saving techniques under pressure.
At our community engagement table, we connected with families and attendees, raising awareness about burns prevention and safety. We distributed Ben and Bella storybooks, first aid magnets, and stickers to help raise awareness of the common causes of burns and spread the 20-to-cool burn first aid rule.
The MERC Competition concluded with a celebratory Awards Ceremony Ball, a wonderful opportunity to recognise the incredible efforts of all participants over the weekend.Congratulations to Northern Star Resources for winning the event! The evening also featured fundraising activities, with the Fiona Wood Foundation proudly presented with a cheque for $42,570 to support our research and education programs.
