The Department of Communities has issued a reminder to Childcare operators regarding their obligations to uphold their policies and procedures due to the recent spate of incidents involving hot liquid burns to children. We know that creating safe environments for children is a priority for educators, and through prevention education, this is achievable.
In response, the Fiona Wood Foundation and Kidsafe Australia (WA) are keen to support the Department by asking the community to be vigilant this winter to prevent burns and be aware of the correct first aid steps to treat burn injuries. These messages coincide with the beginning of National Burns Awareness Month, which focuses on raising awareness on prevention and correct first aid treatments for burns and scalds.
Our latest education initiative, The Ben and Bella Burnsafe Superheros burn prevention program, has been developed by the Fiona Wood Foundation using the latest data from The Burn Registry of Australia and New Zealand (BRANZ). Using this data and our philosophy that prevention is better than cure, we use an engaging and interactive storytelling approach that invites children to become burn safe superheroes to spot the burn bandits and learn key safety messages. Each stand-alone book includes a teachers’ guide mapped to the Early Years Framework (Kindy) and the West Australian P-2 Curriculum. The guides include resources, discussion points and activities to improve children’s knowledge and understanding of burn injury, prevention, and burn first aid.
Early prevention education is crucial for avoiding burn injury. This is why we feel so passionately about all West Australian children having the opportunity to leave about burn safety, and we would love your support in including these books as part of your home library, in your schools or in early childhood services.
Thank you Chevron Australia for supporting the development of the program and investing in education for our children.
