At the FWF, we are inspired by individuals who push beyond their limits to create real change. Team Swimm’d Alive embodied this spirit in the South32 Rottnest Channel Swim over the weekend.
After months of training, the team set off before dawn, ready to take on the 19.7km challenge. They had a strong start, but at 16km, a snagged propeller left their support boat stranded for 90 minutes, preventing swimmer rotations. Despite their determination, they narrowly missed the 18km cutoff and were pulled from the race at 17.5km.
What made their effort even more remarkable was the last-minute additions to the team. Blake Geelen (swimmer) and Darcy Walker (paddler) joined just 24 hours before the race, stepping up in incredible fashion. Alongside them, skippers Will and Rory Hart played a crucial role in guiding the team through the challenge, ensuring their safety and keeping spirits high despite the setback.
A special shoutout to Jack, who has undergone more than 30 surgeries for cerebral palsy. After his swim, getting back into the boat was a challenge in itself, but his determination to take on every obstacle, supported by his teammates, is truly inspiring.
While the finish line remained just out of reach, their impact is still felt. Together, through their incredible efforts and the support of their family and friends, they have raised $4,003.95 for burns research and care. A special thank you to Drakesbrook Fine Wines, whose generous $2,532 donation helped them surpass their fundraising goal.
On behalf of the Fiona Wood Foundation team and the burns survivors whose lives will be better because of their efforts—thank you, Team Swimm’d Alive.
