Interview: Dr Lisa Martin discusses Life After Burn on Health Scene

Dr Lisa Martin from the Fiona Wood Foundation recently joined Kerry Scott on Health Scene, produced by Fremantle Media, to discuss the development of the Life After Burn book and the important role storytelling can play in recovery after burn injury.

During the interview, Dr Martin shared how the book emerged from research conversations with burn survivors at the Fiona Stanley Hospital Burns Unit. Through these discussions, she observed that although many patients experience similar injuries, their recovery journeys can vary widely. This insight inspired the creation of Life After Burn, a resource that brings together the wisdom, reflections and coping strategies of people who have lived through burn injury.

The book features short stories and personal insights written by burn survivors for others navigating their own recovery. By sharing lived experiences, it offers reassurance, perspective and practical approaches that help patients better understand the emotional and psychological challenges that can accompany burn recovery, as well as the many ways individuals adapt and move forward after injury.

In the conversation, Dr Martin also highlights the importance of peer experience in recovery, noting that hearing the stories of others who have been through similar journeys can be a powerful source of support and understanding.
