Spotlight on the Research Buddy Program

At the Fiona Wood Foundation, people with lived experience guide our work at every stage. Our research is built through close collaboration between individuals and families affected by burn injury, alongside researchers and clinical teams, all working towards improved recovery, wellbeing and long-term quality of life.

Our Research Buddies connect directly with researchers, helping shape the direction of studies through lived experience. Their voices ensure research questions reflect real needs and that innovation remains grounded in what truly matters during recovery. By listening closely to lived experience, we strengthen both the relevance and impact of our work.

This approach includes adults, children and young people, recognising that recovery looks different at every stage of life. These perspectives influence how studies are designed, how families are supported and how research priorities are set across the Foundation.

This year, Jack joined Dr Andrew Stevenson’s next-generation spray-on skin research as a Research Buddy. Jack experienced a friction burn to his foot at the age of six and has since undergone multiple surgeries and rehabilitation. His involvement is now helping inform research aimed at improving future treatments and recovery experiences for other young people.

If you have experienced burn injury, care for someone who has, or support a loved one and would like to be kept informed about future opportunities to be involved, you can update your opt-in contact preferences and Burn Family information by clicking here.
