We are excited to announce that Dr Blair Johnson has been awarded one of eight Western Australian Early-Career Child Health Researcher Fellowships for 2024. This fellowship will support Blair's innovative project titled "A Novel Model to Understand Heart Disease in Childhood Burns." The project aims to investigate the mechanisms that link childhood burn injuries to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Building on previous research by Blair and the FWF research team, this project will establish an experimental model to examine how physiological changes following burn injuries may lead to cardiovascular issues. Blair's research will explore the interactions between platelets, immune cells, blood vessel health, and metabolic markers to understand better how these factors contribute to cardiovascular problems over time. Additionally, this model will aid in developing and testing interventions that could prevent or reduce long-term heart complications in burn survivors, potentially improving clinical practices and patient outcomes.
The 2024 WA Early-Career Child Health Researcher Fellowship is supported by the BrightSpark Foundation, the Western Australian Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, and the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation. The Fiona Wood Foundation congratulates Blair on this well-deserved recognition as one of WA's emerging child health researchers. We look forward to sharing updates with our FWF community as his project progresses.
