We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our burn families, scientific and medical community, charity partners and supporters for your kind messages in response to our announcement that Fiona has been inducted into the 2024 WA Science Hall of Fame.
The official announcement was made Monday night (19.08.24) at the Premier's Science Awards. Although Fiona was unable to attend in person due to her commitment to a burn care conference, a group of representatives and loved ones were present to accept the award on her behalf and celebrate this significant achievement.
During the evening, Fiona shared a message via video which you can view here view here or read below:
“As a young doctor, I saw a child with a burn injury from a cup of coffee, and I remember thinking, we have got to be able to do better than that. Decades ago, I started with a vision of scarless healing, inside and out. Everything we have done over that time has been building the momentum to drive that home: scarless healing in mind and body. We have made progress, absolutely, but we have certainly not finished the job.
In the beginning, I knew there was a physical scar and a psychological scar. Now we know there is a physiological scar, so our research is now trying to address not only the outside and mental health but also the physiological changes due to inflammation and how that impacts the immune system for life.
Over my career, I have been fortunate to be able to make folks think differently about what we do and how we treat people with burn injuries. I would like to keep that going forward. Every day, we learn something new, and there is an opportunity within that to reduce suffering, not just from burn injuries but more broadly as well.” - Fiona Wood
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support – it means the world to us.
