National Science Week is an opportunity to celebrate the people, ideas and curiosity that drive scientific discovery.
At the Fiona Wood Foundation, research is central to building the knowledge needed to better understand burn injury and improve recovery for patients now and into the future.
Today, we are putting the spotlight on Dr Lucy Barrett, Senior Research Fellow at the Fiona Wood Foundation and Co-head of the Burn Injury Research Unit at The Kids Research Institute.
Lucy is an immunologist whose research investigates how burn injury can influence the immune system over time, particularly following non-severe paediatric burns.
Using advanced immune profiling, Lucy studies inflammation, changes in immune function and the biological pathways involved in tissue repair. Her research is helping to build a clearer understanding of the physiological effects of burn injury and identify early signs that recovery may not be progressing as expected.
To mark National Science Week, we asked Lucy three questions about what first inspired her interest in science, what she enjoys most about working in the lab and what continues to fascinate her about the immune system.
Read Lucy’s answers below and discover the curiosity behind her research.
