FPA Australia Research Scholarship

Established in 2024

Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) is the national peak body for fire safety and the fire protection industry. As a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity, FPA Australia represents approximately 1,800 organisations and up to 30,000 individuals involved in the provision, use and support of fire protection products and services.

At the heart of FPA Australia’s work is a commitment to protecting people, property and communities from the risks of fire. This commitment extends beyond fire prevention to supporting those whose lives have been touched by fire and burn injury.

The Fiona Wood Foundation is proud to be FPA Australia’s longstanding Foundation Partner. Through ongoing fundraising initiatives and events, including the Fire Australia Conference Gala and Awards Dinner, FPA Australia and its community have continued to support the Foundation’s work in burn research.

In 2024, this partnership led to the establishment of the FPA Australia Research Scholarship, providing dedicated funding to support research aimed at improving the treatment, care and recovery of people who experience burn injuries.

The scholarship reflects a shared commitment to making a meaningful difference, bringing together FPA Australia’s focus on fire safety and prevention with the Fiona Wood Foundation’s commitment to advancing burn care through research.

Supporting Burn Research

The FPA Australia Research Scholarship provides financial support for postgraduate researchers undertaking clinically relevant burn research.

Through a living allowance stipend, the scholarship enables researchers to dedicate time to investigations that advance scientific knowledge, explore new approaches to treatment and contribute to improved clinical care.

By supporting the next generation of researchers, FPA Australia is helping advance research with the potential to improve outcomes and quality of life for people recovering from burn injuries.

Scholarship Recipients

The scholarship supports researchers whose work contributes to advancing burn care and improving patient outcomes.

2024 | Dr Angus Barber

Dr Angus Barber was the inaugural recipient of the FPA Australia Research Scholarship. His research investigates the use of Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) to help surgeons distinguish between viable and non-viable tissue during burn wound debridement.
