2025 Your Impact Research Event

On Wednesday 9 April, our Burn Family came together with Fiona Wood Foundation researchers and collaborators at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research for the 2025 FWF Research Impact Update.

The evening was an opportunity to hear about research underway, meet the people behind the work and continue conversations about burn injury, recovery and research.

PhD student E. Heather Russell shared her research into enhancing human healing to drive regeneration. Dr Andrew Stevenson, one of Heather’s PhD supervisors, joined her to discuss the research and what they are learning about the way the body heals following injury.

We also welcomed Dr Patrick Mulder from the Netherlands, who shared the work of the Burn Research Lab Beverwijk and spoke about collaboration between the Dutch burns research community and the Fiona Wood Foundation.

Kevin Fuchsbichler shared his personal burn story and reflections on recovery on what he described as his “burn anniversary”, marking the date of the accident that caused his burn injury. His contribution brought an important lived experience perspective to the evening and shared with our Burn Family a personal reflection on recovery over time.

The evening also included the 2025 Melissa Murdoch Burns Nursing Award, honouring the memory of Melissa Murdoch and recognising the contribution of burns nursing.

Following the presentations, the conversation continued over refreshments, with time for our Burn Family to speak directly with researchers, ask questions, share perspectives and connect with others in our community.
